Gutters protect your walls and foundations by taking roof water away. We repair and replace leaking, rusted and sagging gutters, fix downpipes and match profiles and colours where sections need replacing, and we connect downpipes properly to the stormwater system.

Gutter repair and replacement
Downpipe repair and connection
Rusted and leaking joints
Sagging gutters and loose brackets
How a typical gutters and downpipes job runs, start to finish.
We check gutters, brackets, downpipes and the stormwater connection.
We fix joints and brackets or replace the damaged lengths.
We connect downpipes to the stormwater drain.
We run water to check flow and joints.
Gutters work hard and get little attention. Leaves and debris block them, standing water rusts steel, joints open as the metal moves with heat, and brackets loosen under the weight of water and leaf litter. A gutter that overflows at the front, or sags in the middle, is telling you the fall or the fixings have gone.
Overflow in rain, sagging sections, rust spots, water marks on the fascia, plants growing in the gutter, dripping at joints and stained walls below are common signs. A gutter that holds standing water after rain is not falling towards the downpipe. Mark where you see it overflow, since that shows where the problem is.
Short sections with a hole or a failed joint can be repaired, resealed or patched. A gutter that is rusted along its length, bent or the wrong size for the roof is better replaced. Ask for both options, and ask what each will fix. A cheap patch on an old gutter often means paying again within a year or two.
Steel gutters are common and strong but can rust where the coating is damaged. Aluminium does not rust and is lighter but can dent. Plastic is cheap and light but can become brittle in the sun. Near the coast, ask about materials and coatings that resist salt. The best choice depends on your roof, budget and location.
A gutter that is too small overflows in heavy rain, and one with too little fall holds water. The size should suit the roof area draining into it and the number of downpipes. Ask the plumber how much fall they plan and where the downpipes will go, particularly on long runs.
A downpipe has to carry water to the stormwater system or another legal point of discharge. If it spills against a wall or onto a path, footings and paving can suffer over time. Check that each downpipe connects to a drain and that the pit is clear. Our stormwater drains page covers underground connections.
Leaf guards reduce how often a gutter needs cleaning, but they do not remove the need. Fine debris and roof grit still collect. Check them each year, and clean before the wet season. Cleaning from a ladder is a common cause of falls, so use a safe method or hire someone.
A leaking gutter can rot the fascia board behind it. If the timber is soft, it needs repair or replacement, and painting over it will not fix it. Tell us if you see peeling paint or soft spots so the cause is dealt with at the same visit.
At least once a year, and more often under overhanging trees. Clean before storm season.
Sometimes. Matching profile and colour on an old roof can be hard, so ask what is available.
Often the gutter is blocked or the fall is wrong. Water may also be running down the roof faster than the gutter can take it.
Usually not for like-for-like work, but heritage overlays may limit materials. Check with your council.
Walk around the house in rain and note where water overflows, drips or runs down walls. Check the fascia for soft spots and the roof edge for sagging. Decide what colour and profile you want, and ask your plumber how the new gutter will connect to existing downpipes. If you are repainting or re-roofing, replace the gutter at the right stage so you do not damage new work.
Ask what will happen to the old gutter, and whether the quote includes the disposal.
Long gutter runs need more than one downpipe. A rule of thumb is that more downpipes means less overflow in a storm, but the right number depends on the roof area and gutter size. Ask the plumber to explain how many downpipes the run will have and why. A gutter that is set too level will hold water, and one too steep can look odd and overshoot at corners.
Look for gutters pulled away from the fascia, joints that opened, downpipes knocked out of line and debris blocking outlets. Check the garden for washed-out soil beside walls. If water came into the roof space or ceiling, photograph the damage and call a plumber or roofer promptly, because wet insulation and timber get worse the longer they stay wet.
Replacement suits gutters that are rusted, sagging or leaking at joins. Options include different profiles and materials. Match the gutter size to the roof area and rainfall.
Ask about fascia condition, since rotted fascia needs repair first.
Downpipes must connect to stormwater, not discharge against the house. Check the connection and any pit at the base. Poor drainage near foundations can cause damp.
If water pools near the wall, tell the plumber.
Gutters collect leaves and grit, and how often they need cleaning depends on the trees around you and the roof. Many homes need it at least twice a year, and homes under trees need it more often. Clean before heavy rain seasons.
Safe access matters. If the roof is steep or high, have a professional do it. Check for sagging, rust spots and leaking joins while cleaning.
